Nashville Flood: Water Conservation, Lipstick Lounge & More

  • Water conservation is becoming more and more important in Nashville as the days go by. This is as big a deal as anything when it comes to keeping the population of Nashville safe and healthy. Millions of people die around the world every year after drinking water from unsanitary sources. As the United Nations noted in a 2007 report on the world’s water situation, “The state of human health is inextricably linked to a range of water-related conditions: safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, minimized burden of water-related disease and healthy freshwater ecosystems.” A lack of access to clean water is bad news for everyone in Nashville but is especially dangerous for children under the age of 5 – and everyone who washes a car or waters a lawn right now is pushing us closer to the danger zone. Please, report non-essential water use to kim.minton@nashville.gov and do your part to make sure we all keep our access to safe, clean water.

  • There will be 2-for-1 liquor until 10pm, 2-for-1 beer all night long, and free hot dogs to everyone until they run out tonight at Lipstick Lounge, on the corner of 14th and Woodland here in East Nashville. Here’s the damage report straight from them (thanks, Eat Me Nashville!):

Ok guys. As the Mayor of Lipstick, we need to rally to support our bar. So many of you came out to bail out the water in the basement, and Christa, Kathleen, Jonda and Rachel are so appreciative and the damage was not nearly as bad as first expected. BUT… the flood did cause some losses… freezer… hot water heater…food stock.. chairs.. paper product… and the cost of that stuff adds up. This place has given to all of us thru various fundraisers for those in need, support for softball teams, roller girls, etc. Now is our time to give back. Come out and support the best bar ever….

Come support the Lipstick Lounge tonight!

  • One of our East Nashville neighbors, Michelle LaBanca (@acnabal on Twitter), is collecting donations today and delivering them to East Park Community Center for people who can’t get out of their houses for one reason or another. If you text your address to 615-498-4488, she’ll come pick up your donations. Thanks, Michelle!
  • Even with all the mess created by the floods, the music rolls on here in Nashville. The weekly Music City Roots series at Loveless Cafe is all about East Nashville tonight, featuring performers who either live or have strong ties to our part of the city. Playing tonight will be Elizabeth Cook, Kevin Gordon, The Wrights, and Stephen Simmons. There’s a full preview from Music City Roots available here. No tickets are necessary for this show – just bring cash or canned goods to donate at the door. All proceeds go to flood relief efforts at the Community Fund of Middle Tennessee.
  • People in Boston know what’s going on down here. They have a heartbreaking gallery of photos from our city here.

Lets not resort to turning each other in to the the water Gestapo. If you see someone you think is using too much water, go tell them to stop using too much water. There’s no need to get mom and dad involved.

  2. Jason Kirk says:

Ryan – for those who will listen to reason, that’s a great approach. But not everyone listens to reason. If that kind of talk fails, it’s good for people to know where to turn next.

  3. Rachel says:

I agree that we shouldn’t be turning neighbors into the water Gestapo if you can simply talk to them yourself. The message I took from the post is to be on the lookout for excess water usage that might be overlooked – like businesses and parks with sprinkler systems, where there isn’t a person to ask to turn it off.
